Visiting the Curiocity Science Centre in Freising
How can topics such as quantum sensing be explained in an accessible way, not only in the classroom but also in science centres? The QOOOL Sensing team explored this question during a visit to the newly opened Science Centre Curiocity in Freising town centre.
During an evening event, the project and the demonstrators – QOOOL Sensing Fluoro, DIY and Magneto – were first presented. Through these experiments, staff at the Science Centre and interested visitors gained an insight into the fundamentals of sensor technology, quantum sensor technology and NV centres in diamonds. In addition, various experiments using the senseBox were presented, along with live demonstrations of fluorescence and magnetic field measurements. Using specific examples, it was shown how quantum sensors can measure magnetic fields, for instance in relation to brain activity or the Earth’s magnetic field.
The meeting then focused on a joint discussion of how current topics in quantum technology can be conveyed in a clear and lasting way, both in school lessons and in informal learning environments such as science centres. Numerous ideas were discussed as to how interactive demonstrators, open educational resources and experimental work can help to break down barriers to complex scientific topics.
The visit provided valuable ideas for future collaborations and the further development of outreach formats within the project.
