QOOOL Sensing at CPEM 2026 in Madrid

On 6 September 2026, the time had finally come: we flew to Madrid in Spain for a week to attend the ‘Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements’ (CPEM2026). We had previously submitted our short paper ‘π-Mk1 – A miniaturised platform for a portable, quantum-based vector magnetometer’, which, fortunately, was accepted.

Surrounded by numerous experts from the metrology sector, we were able to present our poster on our work within the QOOOL Sensing project at Stand 42. It wasn’t long before the first interested parties from all over the world – including Japan, Canada and the USA – approached us to find out how an NV magnetometer might be used for their applications in the future.

As most of those present typically work in the field of cryogenic quantum systems, such as Josephson Voltage Standards (JVS), Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesisers (JAWS) or Quantum Hall Resistors (QHR), the NV centre in diamonds and its potential were still largely unknown. This gave us the opportunity to shed some light on the subject with Magneto.

As well as numerous high-calibre presentations in three concurrent sessions on (quantum) current, voltage, resistance and weighing technology (Kibble balance), the event offered plenty of opportunity for dialogue, discussion and networking, accompanied by excellent catering. A particular highlight was the gala dinner on Wednesday evening, featuring a four-course menu.

Now it’s up to us to make the most of the new contacts we’ve made to put our π-Mk1 platform and Magneto into practice. CPEM, we reckon we’ll be seeing you again.
